Kids love books about cute furry dogs, especially cute, furry, rambunctious dogs. And Baron Thinks Dogs are People too is sure to be a favorite “dog” book among kids everywhere.
Baron is a charming bouncy little character whose family loves him very much, and they treat him very well. Yet all Baron really longs for is a best friend. But he goes about getting one all wrong, and he is soon send to dog school to learn some manners.
Colorful, lively illustrations by Kevin Collier work perfectly with the vivid text by Laurie Dean that just begs to be read out loud. For example, kids will giggle when they hear how Baron loved to be “squished between two people, like jam in a sandwich.” Then they’ll laugh out loud to discover that Emma (the young girl whose family owns Baron) “dressed him in a tutu and shoes.”
But while the story has its silly side, it also shows Baron working hard in dog school. “He got no special treatment there. Baron worked and worked on his lessons.” Then he does his best for all the family when Dad has to leave for a while with the Air Force. And, in the end, Baron learns how to behave himself. He also figures out just what it takes to find a best friend. And it really isn’t so difficult after all!
