Many people wonder if dogs see in black and white. This is a very common question, and the answer might surprise you. It is common to want to humanize pets, so we hope that they see and feel the same things we do, but this is rarely the case.

How Dogs See

Dogs tend to be nearsighted due to week eye muscles, but they actually do have some color vision, but it is much worse then ours.

The dog’s retina actually has a smaller number of cone cells, which are cells needed to see colors, then human retinas. They do have cone cells that can distinguish color between blue, yellow, and gray. But the dog’s retina actually lacks cone cells that can distinguish red and green, so this is very similar to people who are red-green colorblind.

Since dogs have trouble seeing red, you have to wonder why most of the popular dog toys are red? A better color for these toys might be blue or yellow.

Dog Sight Advantages

Dogs do perceive some colors, but are probably best at distinguishing more subtle shades of gray and darker colors. Some advantages that dogs have over us when it comes to vision, is that they do have large pupils and a wide field of vision which makes it very easy for them to following moving objects.

Their eyes also have a large number of rods cells, these are the cells that detect light, so they can see pretty well in the dark, much better then us.

So even though dogs have much poorer color vision then humans do, any lack in this area is more than made up by their great sense of hearing and smell.

So dogs see in black and white? Yes they do, but they also see some colors, but not as bright or as vivid as we do.

Billy Connolly is the comedian of his generation. The greatest comedian ever to come out of the UK. Here is a list of 10 of his best DVDs.

1. Billy and Albert.

Filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 Connolly shows exactly why he was regarded as one the top 3 comedians in the world alongside Richard Pryor and Robin Williams.

Contains some of his classic routines such as Tarantulas and their wily ways and Scuba Diving.

Hilarious from start to finish with some of Connolly’s notorious ADHD thrown in for good measure.

2. Billy Connolly Live 1991

Connolly at his very best. Some brilliant routines about pit-bull terriers, dog sex and chatting up women. Also has one the funniest sets you will ever see about football.

This tour became infamous after Margaret Thatcher’s daughter Carol stormed out of one of his show after taking exception to jokes Connolly made about her mother’s resignation as Prime Minister.

3. Billy Connolly Live 1994

Another night at the Hammersmith Apollo and another classic Connolly DVD. Some classic stories about growing up in Glasgow, his early work in the shipyards, and singing at parties.

This video was also highly controversial. Shortly after it’s original release it was removed from distribution after jokes Connolly made about mass-murderer Fred West. With West’s trial still ongoing at the time several minutes were removed after he complained that it may prejudice his case.

Connolly famously remarked “I think the bodies in your garden will do that Fred.”

4. Billy Connolly Bites Yer Bum

Filmed at the Victoria Apollo in 1981 this was Billy Connolly’s first live video. A culmination of a year-long tour of Britain.

Contains a lot of Connolly’s cruder early material and some classic song parodies.

5. Hand Picked by Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly’s second ever live video. Contains his brilliant routine about ‘The Lovely Raquel – the inflatable lady.’

This is early Connolly when his act was more based on jokes than his later observational-style.

6. Billy Connolly Live in Dublin 2002

Even approaching his 60th birthday Billy Connolly yet again proves his is one of the best in the business. This show was the pinnacle of his World Tour of England, Wales and Ireland. This video also spawned his youtube hit about the tobacco police and mobile phones.

Contains bonus footage from his sell-out nights in Belfast, Killarney, Newcastle, Plymouth, Cardiff and London.

7. World Tour of Scotland

The first of Connolly’s World Tour series for the BBC and in my opinion the best. In a 6-part series Connolly travels the length and breadth of his native country re-visiting a lot of his old haunts. Inter-mixed with footage from over 60 live shows during his tour.

Connolly visits many locations that are close to his heart throughout his native country.

8. World Tour of Australia

Billy Connolly’s second BBC tour series. A country that Connolly hated in his early days it is now a place he truly loves. He experiences several Australian customs and attractions including swimming with dolphins, pie floaters and museums and galleries featuring Aboriginal art.

9. World Tour of England, Wales and Ireland

The third in the World Tour series for the BBC. Connolly travels throughout the UK to show some of the places close to his heart. This includes things such as: the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland; His grandfather’s grave in Southern Ireland; and the Geordie miners.

10. Billy Connolly Journey to the edge of the world

Connolly’s latest travelogue takes him to some of the wildest and remotest places of the world. He explores the vast Arctic region, from Canada’s Nova Scotia to the Northwest Passage of the Pacific Ocean. Following in the footsteps’ of the world’s most audacious explorers he searches for bears, whales and icebergs. He also encounters many people who have found home in this frozen wilderness.

All of these DVDs and more are available on the Billy Connolly Ultimate DVD Box Set

What type of food can dogs eat that’s not dry dog food or canned dog food?

I need to know what type of food can dogs eat and what can’t they eat because I want to feed my dog food other than regular dried up food and canned food. For example, food that people eat. Please give me a website vetrerinarian approved that the food they can eat are good for them.

What is not good for them
Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs

The toxic compound in chocolate causes nervous system excitement which may lead to cardiac arrhythmias and death. 115kg of milk chocolate can cause symptoms in 15kg dog. Dark chocolate is even more potent

Onions, leek, garlic and chives
Onions cause a particular type of anemia due to damage to the red blood cells in dogs

the toxic dose can be as low as 15-30g/kg.
If fed at a greater then 0.5% of your animal’s body weight, toxic effects are always noted. A chihuahua would need 30g or more. A labrador of 30kg, would need 450g or more, however to be safe i would not include any in your dogs receipes. Other allium species can be toxic, such as leek, garlic and chives, but only in large amounts, which is why it is safe to fed a little garlic in some of the recipies.

Mushrooms
Do not allow your dog to eat wild mushrooms when out for a walk, there are many possible toxic effects and it is difficult to identify which mushrooms are safe.

Grapes
Grapes and raisin have recently been found to cause vomiting, shaking and acute renal failure.their toxic properties have not been fully examined.Best not to fed in any amount

Corn Cobs
Corn cobs
especial those divided into smaller piecxes can be lethal to dogs. it is NOT that sweet corn is toxic in any way but the fact that dogs can swallow them whole. the cob becomes lodge in the intestines of the poor dog and has to be removed surgically.

Cooked Bones
Please don’t fed cooked bones to your dogs or cats, they are very likely to splinter and the sharp ends can lodge anywhere from the back of the throat to the large intestines.

Other toxic foods
Avocado, Alfalfa, Alcohol, Baby food, cat food, coffee, tea and other caffeine, hops, human vitamins,Macadamia nuts, mouldy and spoiled foods,

What they can eat
Raw bones are an excellent source of calicum and far less likely to get stuck.
Carrots
Celery including leaves
pumpkin
rice
beef,Pork,Pear,veal,chicken,bacon, ham
Polenta,Broccoli
capsicum-seeds removed
Cauliflower
Bean sprouts
potatoes
Sweet potatoes, spinach
Lettuce
Kidney beans
oatmeal
molasses
Parsley,Thyme, Marjoram, Basil, oregano leaves
Natural yoghurt-as a treat
Cheese-as a treat
Lentils-Some lentils require to be soaked overnight.
Liver-moderately-too much can be bad
Kidneys-moderately-too much can be bad
Heart-moderately-too much can be bad
Ginger,bok choy,Couscous,turnips,parsnips
Zucchini, cumin,chickpeas, coriander,

I dont want a big dog. I have a shih-tzu already (he is 4) and honestly, he isnt mean to my son (16 months old) but he isnt really nice either. I’m keeping him. But I want to know what “other” small dogs are out there that are good with small children.

Thanks.

I personally think it depends on how you train the dog. I have dogs, both are great with dogs but in different ways. My StaffyxPom is good with kids because she is playful and enjoys the company of children. My CavalierxPom is also good with kids because he is quiet, loving and laid back.

okay so everyone (including doctors, supposedly) says that dogs see in black and white and not color. what i am wondering is how anybody ever came to this conlcusion. nobody other than the dog can see through its eyes, what makes doctors so sure that dogs dont see color?

No not everyone claims that dogs can only see in black and white. Only the people who don’t know better claim this.

Dogs have rods and cones the same as humans do. Dogs do see in color but not as sharply as we do.

I think my dog is truly a beautiful sight. Through the years I’ve studied and practiced the best ways to get a memorable picture of my canine companion. Here are a few pointers to help you take good pictures of your dog.

You want your dog to be relaxed and at ease. Try to take the picture with him in his favorite hangout. This can be his favorite chair, his place under the shady tree in the backyard, or the porch. You will know the place that I am talking about. It’s his special spot and he loves it there.

Try to tell a story with the shot. You have seen pictures of dogs looking out the window. We can imagine a story behind this photo. It doesn’t have to be a long story. For example, you might be trying to take a photo of your dog and in walks your toddler with an ice cream cone and your dog knocks it out of his hands. The end result will be a fantastic story, albeit one that is a little upsetting for your youngster. It would be a good idea to have your camera at hand so you can get to it quickly when you see a good story.

Be prepared for movement. Dogs are unpredictable. Some dogs jump at the sound of the shutter click so try to set your camera accordingly.

Follow your dog’s thought process. In other words, eat, sleep and play. Simplify the set. If it is indoors, get rid of the clutter. If outdoors, watch out for lawn furniture, stray toys, etc. Delete things that distract and do not add to the story.

Try to fill your frame with your furry subject. Place the camera at the same level at your dog. By seeing your subject’s point of view, it can give you extra creativity that leads to better photographs. Remember that you are not after the scenery; your dog should be the center of attention.

Remember the treats! If your dog has a weakness for peanut butter, biscuits, or stinky cheese, use them to take that perfect shot. This works great when photographing people with dogs. Try to have the person and the dog to look in the same direction. Make sure all parties in the picture are comfortable with one another.

Study your dog prior to the photography session to see what sets him apart from other animals. If you want to take a special photograph, behavior is the key. What do they do to entertain themselves? Do they have the same habits as their owners?

Another approach to dog photography is to take the shot when your dog isn’t looking. Some of the best photographs are taken when the dog is oblivious to the camera. It is during these times when you catch that certain expression or when he almost looks human.

Last but not least, exercise your dog prior to the event. A walk or some play time will do wonders for your dog’s temperament and adaptability for the photo session. Following these tips should help you to get that perfect photograph of your loyal and true furry friend.

Safe to give dogs bones, epically to small dog breeds?

Okie i have two small dogs, a peakiness and a pug, i was alweays told you copuldnt give small dogs bones but my grandparents who also have a small dog breed, a palmaranian, and give her boens all time. I an’t sure but I figure I ask to make sure, is it same to give bones to small breed dogs? It be stake bones and a few chicken leg bones. Safe to give or not?

yes, Yes, YES!!!! As long as they are RAW. Smaller dogs have notoriously bad teeth so it is vital to look after them.

ALL dogs need bones as an essential source of accessible calcium and to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Think of the bones as a meal rather than a treat and make sure that the bone is really meaty. The meat acts like dental floss and cleans between the teeth and massages the gums while the edible bone scrapes the teeth clean.

A perfect size for your dogs would be a chicken drumstick. You may need to shred or slice the meat to get them started but once they get the hang of it they’ll be fine.

PLEASE read the myths link – it will put answer all your questions
