Breed group: Herding

Weight: Male: 70-84, Female: 57-71 lbs

Height: Male: 23.5, Female: 22 inches

Overview

The Bergamasco is originally from Persia, and it is believed that this ancient shepherding breed is at least 2000 years old. These dogs were bred to be independent and clever. After the Second World War these dogs were almost extinct, but were saved by the efforts of Dr. Maria Andreoli – an Italian breeder and scientist. Even today, the Bergamasco is still a very rare breed.

Temperament

The Bergamasco is not ideal for someone with no previous dog ownership experience. This breed is dependable, calm and extremely protective of their families and homes. They will be tolerable of other dogs if they do not see them as threats. The Bergamasco will also get along fine with children. These dogs are very wary and suspicious of strangers – and they are always attentive, caring, level-headed, distinguished and well-balanced. These dogs were never bred to be just pets.

Care

If the coats of these dogs are fully flocked, they will not require a lot of care, and should only be brushed and bathed occasionally. Then from two to three years, their coats will settle into a locking pattern that will continue throughout the dog’s life. Their coat consists of three types of hair: the undercoat, the goat hair and the woolly top coat. The Bergamasco is a very straightforward, but genuine dog – and this is reflected in their coats. It is advised that the coats of these dogs develop as naturally as possible. The Bergamasco is not a heavy shedding dog, but you will find that they loose some hair during certain stages, especially during puppy hood. The hair loss for these dogs is minimal after the flocks are set. The coat of the Bergamasco is considered to be hair, and not fur. The coat is also considered to be non-allergic, but there are some cases where someone is still allergic to the hair of the Bergamasco.

Training

Bergamasco’s as independent, bright and open-minded dogs. They are however not submissive, and were developed to solve problems on their own. They also need to know why certain commands are given. This bred will not submit to be obedient, but rather to display affection. The Bergamasco will not react positively to training methods that are cruel or unkind. Training of these dogs should also be conducted in a firm, fair and consistent way. It is also advised that these dogs receive the necessary obedience and socialisation training.

Health problems

Seeing that this breed is fairly rare, not a lot is known about health concerns and issues.

One of four Belgian Sheepdogs, the Belgian Tervuren is often mistaken for a German Shepherd because they closely resemble each other in size, coat and color. It is pronounced Ter-VER-en. The Belgian Tervuren is recognized as its own breed by the AKC, but many countries consider all four Belgian Sheepdogs to be one breed even though there are noticeable differences in everything from coat to size to color.

Also known as a “Terv” by their owners, the Belgian Tervuren is named for the Belgian village of Tervuren. They were traditionally used as cattle and sheep herding dogs. They have also been used as police dogs and in narcotics detection, bomb detection, search and rescue and as therapy dogs. While two of the Belgian Sheepdogs are still used more as working dogs, the Belgian Tervuren and Belgian Groenendael are both seen more as companion dogs today.

They are a medium to medium large breed. They weigh between 45-75 pounds and are anywhere from 22″ to 27″ in height. They are an energetic, powerful breed that enjoys exercise and play. Because of their high energy and size, they are not ideal apartment dogs but are perfect for families with large yards or those who have access to parks or fields where they can run.

Their coat color is recognized by the AKC in the colors of a mahogany or fawn base with black tips, mask and ears. A small amount of white on nose, chest and chin is permissible. The long, straight, thick and harsh outer coat and soft dense undercoat needs daily grooming to prevent matting and knots. They shed throughout the year, but it is typically light shedding.

As a guard dog or family dog, the Belgian Tervuren is protective, loyal and highly intelligent. They are energetic dogs that need plenty of exercise and activity whether they are working on the farm or kept mainly as a companion dog. They need to be socialized and trained from an early age. The earlier they are introduced to children, dogs and other pets, the better they will do. They might be dominant towards other dogs. It is important to research a Belgian Tervuren’s history before making a purchase to ensure that there is no aggression found in their lineage. Give your Belgian Tervuren plenty to do and they will be happy. A bored Belgian Tervuren can be a bit destructive as they will find a way to fill their time.

If you are an energetic family looking for a dog that will enjoy activity and outside play, then the Belgian Tervuren is a perfect breed for you. They will match you step for step in running or walking. They will be protective of you and your home and make awesome watchdogs. If you are looking for a farm dog and family companion all rolled into one, any of the Belgian Sheepdogs including the Belgian Tervuren will be ideal for you.

Has anyone heard of a Lagotto Romagnolo?

My family is looking into getting a dog, and I found a breed calle da lagotto romagnolo, and I was just wondering what they are like, and how much exercise they need? We are able to walk a dog once in the morning, and once around 3-ish, and I know that they need plenty of exercise, so I wanted to know if that would be okay?

Thank you for doing your homework! The Lagotto is a wonderful breed for the right family. If you are willing to take a dog into your family and train it on a daily basis, this could be the breed for you, If you want a dog that is willing to run, swim, fetch, and play in general, it’s a lagotto. The breed is exceptionally smart and will try to out think you, so be prepared. Easily trained. Another answer pointed out that they hunt mushrooms, actually, they are the Truffle Dog to the World. The only dog that has been bred to find wild as well as domestic truffles. Their skill is such that they will pass by the truffles that are not ripe and alert to the truffle that is just ready for the market. Two of my dogs hunt truffles that are 8 to 12 inches below the soil.

Your schedule for exercise is appropriate,. but remember, dogs don’t get exercise by walking. That just creates stress. They need to run!

Start your search at the parent club for the breed in the US, www.lagottous.com

When your Yorkshire terrier begins to exhibit neurotic behavior, it is time to take a closer look at what is going on. Small dog breeds tend to have these types of problems more often than large breeds, but it isn’t known why. The important thing is to make your Yorkie feel safe and secure at all times.

If your dog has begun to do anything out of the ordinary, such as spinning in circles uncontrollably or biting on themselves in a self-mutilating manner, it is definitely time to examine the situation more closely and in depth. It is possible for you to help your dog at home without having to seek outside help.

First of all, think about when this particular behavior occurred. Perhaps you can identify a period of time where things changed in your home and your Yorkshire terrier began to behave differently. This did not happen overnight, so discuss this with your family members and anyone else who spends a significant amount of time with your dog.

I once was able to determine that a dog groomer must have hit or scared my dog while he was getting a haircut. Within a few days his behavior changed dramatically. Unlike children, who can usually tell us when someone has been unkind, our dogs are unable to tell us in a way we will recognize. This leads to neurotic behaviors that must be dealt with eventually.

Once you can figure out how and when the behavior may have begun, you will have a much better idea of how to help your Yorkie get past the incident and return to their old self. If someone did something to your dog, such as hitting them or screaming at them, you can show them some additional love throughout each day as a way to help them to recover. You may also want to limit the number of people who are around your dog for awhile.

If this came about due to a situation with another pet in your home, keep them separated now. Dogs are extremely territorial, so they can become quite upset when another animal threatens that position in their home. A visiting animal can cause all kinds of bad behavior because of the threat that your dog is being replaced by someone else.

Keeping your Yorkshire terrier with you as many hours a day as possible will help to get your situation back to normal in no time at all.

And now I invite you to learn more about training your Yorkshire terrier by visiting http://YorkshireTerriersAreTheBest.com to get started right away with having the pet you want and deserve.

If you’ve ever seen papillon dogs in a flyball or agility contest, you know why I say they can fly. These lively little dogs are great for anyone looking for a cute little dog that has enough energy to go on walks or compete in a dog sport.

Papillon is French for butterfly. This name is given because of their ears. They stand up high on their head covered in relatively long hair, looking just like the wings of a butterfly.

It’s an intelligent breed. A lot of small dog breeds have trouble with housetraining, not so with the papillon. They are smart enough to learn a new trick in a matter of minutes, so something as natural as housetraining will cause you no problems. Of course, consistency is the key as with any kind of training.

Papillons are very sociable dogs. They love to be around people. In other words, if you know in advance you’ll have to leave your puppy alone for any length of time, train it as soon as possible to stay home alone. They are very good with other dogs and pets. Children are no problem either, as long as you teach the children to treat the papillon respectfully; it’s a small dog with fragile bones.

It can be rather loud, meaning it has a tendency to bark a lot, especially when it hears a noise. If you live in an apartment or close to your neighbours, you might want to spend some extra time training on controlling your papillon’s barking.

Intrigued by this elegant little canine?
The old adage that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” has given older dogs a bad rap for years, and it is entirely untrue. Of course, like people, older dogs have some habits and customs that may take some time to work out, but they can certainly still learn. Adult dogs are often overlooked when people are searching for dogs for sale. Instead, most people are only looking for puppies for sale, while there are some really great advantages to adopting an adult dog, which many people fail to consider.

Of course everyone loves puppies, which is why puppies for sale move so quickly, whether that be from shelters, rescues, or online petfinder resources. Those cute little bundles of joy are just irresistible, but what many adopting parents forget to consider, is the fact that this stage will only last a number of months before the puppy becomes an adolescent. Adolescence is that experimental high-energy stage that causes many dogs to find themselves up for adoption, because the patience of many dog owners is tested too far. If you do not have the time, energy, and patience to train an adolescent dog, then a puppy might not be the best scenario for you.

There are an abundance of adult dogs that have difficulty finding new homes. Some people think that adult dogs for adoption must have some type of behavior disorder, which is also untrue. Yes, some dogs may have a difficult behavior issue, but the majority of dogs in this situation were put there by irresponsible ownership. Perhaps the owner just didn’t have time any more, or there was a divorce, new child, or relocation. There are so many reasons people get rid of their dogs. Any pet will take some time and effort, but older dogs usually have better attention spans as well as bladder control. With older dogs, training should be fun, while firm and fair. As long as the training is consistent and frequent, they will have no problem catching.

Another great thing about looking for adult dogs for sale is that you already know how big they are, what their coat is like, and some of their breed personality. There are simply fewer unknowns, and depending on your special living circumstances and family situation, this might be the best way to find the perfect K9 companion. There are so many older dogs that need good home, and adopting one is something to think about.
