Amongst the many different types of miniature puppies and teacup dogs are the Chihuahua, Maltese, Miniature Pinscher, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier and the Shih Tzu.

The dogs all have very different temperaments and personalities but the list described above are at least true recognized miniature dog breeds and not one-off runts.

These dog breeds are also known as toy dog breeds and even sleeve dogs. The term Sleeve dogs comes from the renaissance period when the gentry dressed in all their finery had very fashionably large sleeves in their tunics where they could hide or place a small dog! – very nice in winter to help keep you warm not a bad idea especially when there was no central heating available!

One particular problem is that of dehydration, their tiny bodies need to be kept hydrated more often than the larger dogs and water should be close to hand especially in warmer weather or sunny conditions or if they are partaking in outdoor activities.

Another problem is their blood sugar can drop so also ensure you have some doggy-treats close by ready to perk your pooch up.

Some of the breeds also have a tendency to spinal problems, due to the dogs small size the vertebrae can be under more pressure and can fail or cause pain as the dog gets older.

As always, before you buy, do your research, learn as much about the breed as you can and then go looking for your pet – have a look on the internet you might be lucky and find adoption sites where you can pick up a cheap or sometimes free miniature dog to love.

The American Foxhound is very similar to the English Foxhound, but it is lighter and taller than the English cousin. Its reputation is that it has a better sense of smell. The head is long with a good shaped but slightly domed skull. The eyes are big and widely set and have a pleading look. The ears are pendent and broad, set close to the head. On the other hand, with the right amount of exercise they can be loving and gentle. They are brilliant with children. Have no problems getting along with other dogs but a watchful eye needs to be there towards small pets due to the hunting abilities of this breed. They have endless energy and, to stop indoor restlessness, you need to take them on long daily walks. The faster the better so brisk walking, or jogging with this dog is better. As with all dogs this dog needs to know you are in change and this will allow you to lead the way rather than the dog leading.

Health issues: The American Foxhound dog breed is mostly free of a lot of problems. You do need to keep an eye on their weight as they can put on weight easily. Good exercise and portion control works best.

Grooming: The American Foxhound is low maintenance but requires a comb and brush for short haired dogs. This only needs doing a few times a week. Bathing is not needed often and should only be done if required.

Living conditions: The American Foxhound is an active dog. It is best to have a very large garden or acreage. They are not recommended for apartment life. Even with a large garden this dog needs vigorous exercise and a secure garden to stop them chasing a scent that they wish to follow.

Terrier – There are quite a few breed groups within the Terrier breed. These animals love to play and show off. They are full of energy and can mess up a room in a hurry with their antics.

Hound – The bloodhound is often teasingly portrayed as lazy, stubborn, and aloof. This isn’t too far from the truth. They do perk up though when they are on the trail.

If you own a dog of one such breed then you’re probably in for a struggle to establish dominance. Whenever the dog is in your presence it is imperative that you present yourself in a confident manner. The way you carry yourself and the tone of your voice will either reinforce your efforts or betray any underlying fears or insecurities you may have. Medium to low to high dander hypoallergenic dog breeds?

I get down or hypoallergenic dog dander, but I’m not one of those toy breeds. So far I’ve heard that Native American Indian dogs and Samoyeds are good medium / large breeds for allergy sufferers. Anybody know of any similar size breeds of dogs may be fine for people with allergies?

There are many different types of equipment professional dog groomers use. There are things available to you to use that you might not have even knew existed. Some dogs have sensitive skin, extremely dry skin and/or fleas. They make a wide variety of shampoos for all of those purposes and more. Of course, one of the most useful items would be a dog dryer.

Lastly, you will need to have plenty of scissors and clippers in order to trim and style the dogs fur. If you are grooming a dog breed that has a lot of hair in the ears, it would help to have a pair of 5 inch straight hemostats to trim in the ears. You will need at least one pair of dog grooming clippers with different sized blades. There are two types of scissors that are needed. One type is a 6 inch straight dog grooming scissors and the other is a 6 inch curved dog grooming scissors. Thinning shears are used to thin and shape the coat, especially in sensitive areas.

The equipment and supplies listed above are just the basics that most dog groomers use. As your business grows, you will also be able to grow your supply inventory. It is wise to expand your equipment and supplies with your first few months of income, so that you can offer even more services and choices to your clients.
