The Norwegian Lundehund is one of the most unique dogs in existence. One could call it a “super dog” in its field, for it is curiously equipped to perform an exact function and has features which are not present in any other breed. The Lundehund is an ancient breed of dog, which still exists today, useful in the specific task of hunting the Puffin Bird. This bird is a small penguin type which nests in tight crevices in rocks and caves. The Lundehund has at least six double or triple jointed toes on each foot, a double jointed neck which allows it to twist its head almost completely backwards and upside down and ears which close up to prevent water from getting inside.

The standard of the breed requires very specific foot structure: there must be at least six digits on each foot (many have up to eight) and of those digits at least five must be a support for the dog. All five of the toes on the front and four on the back, must have three joints, the rest must all have double joints. The shoulder joints are also constructed so as to allow the dog to spread its front legs out at right angles to its body. All of these features are tools which the dog uses to reach into the rocks and caves which are the nesting places of the Puffin Bird and drag out the bird or its abandoned nest. Because of this breed’s unique nature, the Norwegian Lundehund and the Puffin Bird which it hunts are now protected by the Government of Norway and by conservationist organizations.

Not surprisingly, the breed is also called the Puffin Dog. The Puffin Dog was extremely useful and found in large numbers during the 17th and 18th centuries in Norway. The local people used the dog to hunt the bird for their own table use and also to sell the down feathers to Europe and England. Down pillows made from this bird were much in demand and until the use of nets became popular there were many families who kept two or three of these dogs, not only to provide food for their table but to provide income from the sale of the feathers. Gradually there was less demand for the Puffin dogs when the farmers began to use nets for the capture of the birds. In the more isolated villages the Norwegian Lundehund continued to be used and it is probably only because of their isolation that the breed survived the changes.

Around 1925 the breed had dropped so drastically in number that it was very near extinction. Around that time the Christie family, who were breeders of English Setters, became interested and made efforts to re-establish the breed. The Distemper outbreaks during the second World War nearly decimated the population again and it was only through the intervention of the Christies that the breed managed to survive and then in greatly reduced numbers. By 1960 the count was exceedingly low and Mrs. Christie, at the age of 70, again attempted to resurrect the original bloodlines. It is believed that she re-established the breed with only five specimens of the original breeding stock.

Today there are active clubs around the world who protect and cherish this unusual breed. The dog is a member of the F.S.S. of the American Kennel club.

Those who keep this dog as a pet need to be aware that there are some health problems associated with the breed. The Lundehund Association lists four specific diseases which are also common to some other breeds. These are all related to gastrointestinal problems which can be life threatening or require special diets. Testing can be done for these and it is highly important that breeders test for these conditions before using any dog for breeding. Pet owners need to keep in touch with the breeders of the dog for general health care questions.

Yes, whether you believe it or not these Rat Terriers` got their name starting at the White House within the term of what President? This president owned a little dark colored dog that was well known for eradicating rats in the White House. I have already experienced that with my own little Rat Terrier many times over and actually she has caught and destroyed two rats this year outside my home.

This breed of dogs are great hunting dogs and are very fast making their prey very vulnerable especially if it is a cottontail rabbit that is inside a fenced in area like my own back yard looking for the its entrance hole to make an extremely quick exit with my rat terrier on the tail of the cottontail rabbit that does not end in very good situation for the poor rabbit

My rat terrier is named Starr and she is a very smart pet meaning she learns and trains very well. I had her rolling over for treats within two weeks after I decided that I was going to teach her that easy trick that I have already taught several of my previous dogs and it only takes a few weeks for my dogs to fully understand and perform for me the trick when I simply say “Roll over “or just a twirl of my hand in a circular motion and the dogs will respond by a fast roll over then they want to be rewarded with a treat.

Rat terriers originated in Great Britain where they were developed from a cross between a Terrier and Smooth Fox Terrier in 1820. The adult dogs weigh about 10 or 25 lbs. and stand about 13 or 18 in. tall at the shoulders and the miniatures or about 13 in. and under. There is a much larger strain weighing over 25 lbs. and are called Decker Giants named after the breeder Milton Decker who created a larger breed for a hunting companion.

Rat terriers are really energetic and need some kind activity to keep them active to help them burn off some their daily tanked up energy like exercising by going outside and running and playing is a daily requirements to help with some over abundance of energy. Training these dogs is super easy as compared to some other breeds. Out of all the different breeds of dogs that I have had so far in my life they are all smart enough to understand my commands if I teach them with a daily repetition and if I do not try to overload too much teaching at one time and do not ever give up on the dog entirely because, they will eventually come around to understand you if you train them correctly and properly.

Theodore Roosevelt the 26th president of the United States in 1904 was the one with the little dark colored terrier that was clearing out the rats in the White House what about that -Teddy the Rough Rider!

But, for Rat Terriers you do not have to teach them too much about hunting especially rats but, you might have a problem with them chasing cats because, my Starr hates cats to pieces!

The Korean Jindo dog is a hunting breed that originated in Jindo Island in Korea. Although it is relatively unknown outside of Korea, it is highly celebrated and valued for its fierce loyalty and bravery. The Jindo is a medium sized dog, weighing between about 25 to 50 pounds. It is double-coated and looks like a spit-type dog. Two body styles, Gyupgae and Heutgae, exist. Gyupgae describes a shorter, compact, and more muscular body while Heutgae expresses a slender dog, with less depth of chest and a longer loin. Korean law only officially recognizes white and yellow Jindos as having correct coloration. However, the United Kennel Club recognizes five different coat colors of white, fawn, grey, black and tan, and brindle.

There is no written record of the history of the Jindo. However, experts agree that the Jindo dog originated on Jindo Island. They were probably bred to hunt wild boars, rabbits, badgers, and deer. They have also been known to hunt extremely dangerous animals, such as Siberian tigers. Jindos are one of three dog breeds known that has ever been able to hunt the tigers. They are renowned for their hunting ability due to their courage, cunning, and pack sensibility. There are anecdotal tales in Korea about owners being woken early in the morning to have their Jindo lead them to a deer they killed during the night. Stories also exist of intruding coyotes being killed by Jindos in the United States.

Another favorite tale about a Jindo dog occurred in 1993. Baekgu, a 7 year old female Jindo, was sold to a different owner in a town about 185 miles away from her original owner. She escaped her new home and traveled 7 months back to her old owner, arriving in a skin and bones condition. Baekgu became a national sensation and has a statue erected in her honor in Jindo County.

Jindo dogs are considered a national monument of Korea. They are protected under the Cultural Properties Protection Act under the “Jindo Preservation Ordinance.” Additionally, the breed marched in the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. The United Kennel Club (UKC) recognized the breed in 1998 but the American Kenner Club still does not recognize the breed.

Is there such a dog as a miniature Finnish spitz?

We adopted our dog from the shelter a couple of years ago and the shelter couldn’t tell us what type of dog it was. It looks like a Finnish Spitz, but it weighs only 20 pounds. My wife and I would love to know if there is such a dog as a miniature finnish spitz. Any opinions would be most appreciated.

If not, she is probably mixed with a Pomeranian or LH Chi. Never know.

Administering medicine to your dog can be tricky. Like many humans, dogs generally do not enjoy taking their medication. Here are a few tips and techniques to help you painlessly administer medicine to your dog.

Like a good physician, adopt a pleasant bedside manner. Administer any medicine properly and positively. Always stay calm and affirming as it’s important for your dog to view this experience as something positive. It’s never safe for you to approach your dog aggressively. This will not result in a good experience for your dog and may even lead to hostility when administering medication in the future.

For oral medications

You can hide and/or crush and mix medication in food, have your dog’s medication compounded into liquid or get medication in ointment form.

To hide a pill in food

Choose a food that strong tasting, malleable (peanut butter, cream cheese). Serve your dog several different tastings of food so that they may not notice which sample holds the medication. With the medication buried and hidden inside the food, make sure to reward your dog for eating his/her “treat.”

To crush a pill in food

Before ever crushing medication for your pet’s food, consult your veterinarian as some medications should not be crushed.

Getting your dog’s medication in liquid and/or ointment form

Should your dog not accept medication hidden or crushed in food, ask your veterinarian about a flavored liquid alternative. If your pet doesn’t accept liquid medications, you can check with your veterinarian to see if medication can be made into a form that is rubbed directly onto the skin, which is called transdermal dog medication.

For eye drops or ointment

Make sure to hold your dog securely and if you can’t do this alone, ask someone to secure your dog while applying medication. It is most beneficial if your dog sits or is lying down. Next, clean your dog’s eye area before applying medication. Open your dog’s eye by gently placing your hand on top of your dog’s head, holding the upper eyelid open. Hold the medication at an angle above the eye and put the appropriate amount of medication into the eye. Be extra careful not to touch the eyeball directly. When finished applying your dog’s eye drops or ointment, allow your dog a moment to shut the eye and then massage gently.

For ear drops

Again be sure you hold your dog securely or seek help if needed. Always communicate with your dog in a stress-free and calming way. Gently clean your dog’s ear passage with cotton and then put the ear dropper slightly outside his or her ear canal. Be sure to not to insert the medication to far into your dog’s ear.

For subcutaneous injections

Subcutaneous injections takes expertise, so be sure to follow your veterinarian’s instructions after training. You will need a bag of room-temperature solution cooled in warm water, IV tubing and needles, and rubbing alcohol. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly.

Remove the port of the solution bag, usually located towards the bottom of the bag where you will connect the IV line. Next, connect the IV tubing to the bag of solution. Locate the clamp on the IV tubing and fasten the IV line to bag of solution. Now join the tubing to the solution and IV line.

The IV line, which is now connected to the solution bag, will allow you to monitor the flow of fluid. To assure the safe, steady flow of liquid, you can partially fill the tubing reservoir with liquid, which avoids air bubbles. Remove the needle without removing the needle cap. Put the needle on the end of the IV line and secure. Now, uncap the needle and loosen the clamp. Make sure the clamp is secure and recap the needle.

With alcohol, clean at the injection area, usually between the shoulders. Trim the hair around this area if necessary. Take the extra skin, uncap the needle fully into the skin and inject your dog’s medication promptly. Once you have injected your dog’s medication, put your finger on top of the needle, holding it in place where the needle enters the skin. Slowly open the clamp to the IV and let the liquid flow. Hold the needle into place and monitor the flow.

After administering your dog’s prescribed medication, clamp the IV tubing and remove the needle. Apply pressure to the injection area with alcohol to disinfect the area and prevent bleeding. You will notice a pouch of fluid under your dog’ skin and will slowly dissolve. If the bubble does not dissolve to some degree, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Administering medicine can be simple, fast and pain-free when you know how.

Temperament: This is a lovely affectionate dog that is highly alert, and lively, with lots of confidence. The Lakeland Terrier is particularly good with children. This dog needs firmness, and training, with the owner being a good leader. This dog is a very keen digger and can be prone to obsessive barking, if not well handled and trained away from the habit.

The dog can be trained quite easily with the only problem being, taking its time to potty train. As this is a bright dog training needs variety, to challenge the dog. This dog will get along well with other dogs but socialising, at a young age, with cats and other household pets is needed.

This breed needs a leader that his firm or problems may arise such as tending to guard the toys and food, becoming a dog aggressive and obsessively barking. With good leadership, these will not occur, along with daily walks and training. This can be an excellent dog.

Health issues: The Lakeland Terrier is generally good health. This breed usually doesn’t have any problems to speak of but be sure to find a quality breeder and stay away from in line breeding when possible. Your Lakeland Terrier needs to be up to date on all vaccinations, de-wormings and heart worm preventatives.

Grooming: This breed needs its coat plucking two to three times a year; this is usually done by hand to remove loose hairs. This breed sheds little.

Living conditions: Although the Lakeland Terrier requires daily walks it is suitable for apartment living.

Dog house for Spanish Mastiff! please help!?

I have a spanish Mastiff that is about 120-130 pounds and he is only a year old. i need to keep him outside while i’m at work and school so i want a large dog house that he will be comfortable in and it will keep him warm during the winter months. i have a big yard that he loves the run around in but i want somewhere he can go when it gets a little colder out until i get home. does anyone have any ideas where i can get an insulated dog house for a dog his size for a decent price?? PLEASE let me know!
by the way, i am not just leaving him outside. we have a barn outside but i want to put the dog house inside the barn so he has somewhere to go. i wont be leaving him out for long periods of time, my classes are only 50 min so he will be with me most of the time.

I am surprised that your contract with your breeder allows you leave your dog outside for long periods of time unattended. How about crate training him so you can leave him in the house when you are gone?
