The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed that no one seems to know how to classify. In some countries this breed is considered a member of the Working Group. In other countries he has been placed in the Hound category. In still others he is a classified as a Gun Dog. Historically, the breed performed all of these duties in its native land. The original country of origin of this dog is Africa. The Ridgeback in Africa was used by the natives to harass the lions on a hunt, being quick and agile and making feints at the lion, distracting him while the natives came in for the kill.

The name “Ridgeback” is because of the very distinct line which is created down the center of the back where the hairs lie in opposite direction from the “lay” of the coat, creating a ridge which is obvious and unique to the breed. Only one other breed, the Thai Ridgeback, carries this “trademark”. The ridge should have two swirls of hair at the top of the ridge, creating the appearance of a crown.

The Ridgeback does not enjoy great popularity as a pet. It is strongly independent. This dog happily fulfils the roles of both a guard dog and a hunting dog, but it will do exactly what it wants to do if the owner is not the “leader of the pack”. They are not overly affectionate and do not make friends with strangers. They should not show aggression, but will not fawn over people nor be overly affectionate except to their own household.

The color of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is always a deep red or fawn. White markings, if any, should be small, on the toes or the chest. Males should be 25-27 inches and females 24-25 inches. The “ridge” is of course the identifying characteristic of the breed and must be present and quite obvious. The Ridgeback should move with a long stride and should have good angulation in the rear, he should be agile and able to make quick turns, being of good length of leg for the feinting and quick strikes necessary when on the hunt. The dog’s overall appearance should be that of a well muscled and athletic dog.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback will thrive on country living and makes a protective and fearless guardian of the property. It should never show aggression towards people and this is not part of its nature. This is a dog that should show protective instincts of its territory and should ward off marauding animals. It is fine to have in an urban household if given plenty of exercise. In either case, the Rhodesian Ridgeback needs to have good obedience training as a puppy. they are an energetic and inquisitive breed and can get into a lot of trouble if not kept in a safe fenced in area.

The “Brussels” can be very friendly and outgoing or it can be timid. There is no way of knowing — but early contact with many humans and other animals is encouraged. The breed is known to bark excessively — so it is not always good for apartment living.

Appearance of the Brussels Griffon

The smooth-coated Griffon looks a bit like a bushier pug while the rough-coated Brussels Griffon — with big, round eyes, a bushy “mustache” and long flowing “beard” — resembles a character you would see in Lord of the Rings or perhaps at a Grateful Dead or Phish concert.

Their colors range from reddish brown to tan to black. Mixed colors are also common. Both varieties stand 8 to 10 inches tall and weigh 8 – 11 pounds. Life expectancy is 12 – 14 years.

Grooming and Exercise Needs of the Brussels Griffon

Pekes are very strong willed and self confident. They adore their owners and give tons of kisses, almost obsessively. They yap and bite strangers. They are terrible ankle biters who refuse to come when called. They do not obey, nor do they housebreak easily. Lots and lots of love, but no obedience wrapped up in that cuteness. They also have problems with always having to be the dominant dog in the house. Two female pekes will fight constantly, males are a bit better.

Very intelligent and sensitive these dogs crave companionship. They are at their happiest when amongst humans and a member of the family. Many pet owners do mention that they’re just like humans in the way they think about problems. So like humans they need plenty of companionship and exercise.

The breed can be described as a medium to large sized bird dog with a muscular body, deep chest, and a long neck with a slightly pointed face. Its long ears rest folded and hang close to the head.

A Weimaraner has only two color alleles and in order to make a Blue Weimaraner, at least one allele should be blue. If a Weimaraner has inherited a blue allele, then it will be blue.

Training of a Weimaraner should start as soon as the dog is brought home to enforce the house/family rules and these should be kept strict so the dog understands what is allowed and what is not.

Owners need patience, as this breed is particularly energetic and difficult to control during the first year and a half of its life. Like many breeds, untrained and unconfined young dogs often create their own diversions when left alone, such as chewing house quarters and furniture.

Historically, ownership of these alluring gray dogs was carefully guarded and breeding was strictly controlled by the nobles, and later by The Weimaraner Club of Germany. In fact ownership of the Weimaraner was carefully restricted for decades and only members of the upper class German Weimaraner Club were allowed to own the breed. Given this exclusive ownership, almost all of these dogs lived indoors and where highly pampered, leading to the strong attachment to family life which continues to this day.

A Weim (as they are affectionately known) is not for a person or family that works all day or who doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to the dog. Their energy level is very high. A Weim is a lot of dog and obedience training is a must. In obedience training, you will learn that to heel is a very specific position for your dog, and you will need to use it a lot when out with them.

Nevertheless, Weims are a very special breed of dogs and most fall in love with them because they have such human characteristics. But, please be sure to research the breed before purchasing, and be careful to make sure a Weim is right for you. Weims have to be tolerated as world-class house un-decorators and de-landscapers. They can be like having and extra child!

They have lots of energy, as they were bred originally to hunt all day with their master. Changing this behavior changes that essential Weim requirement at your peril, so make sure you exercise you Weim continually.

Weimaraners are often kind to children, but like any dog are not recommend for very young ones because they can be boisterous enough to accidentally knock a child down.

This breed likes to bark as well!

But, most will love their dependence on human companionship which is exceptionally strong among these dogs, and the fact that they will give so much unconditional love and affection for the family.
