Temperament: The Miniature Pinscher dog is generally of good health and is a proud and courageous dog. With high energy, great spirited and enthusiasm the Miniature Pinscher shines with life. They are loyal dogs to their owners. This dog is generally good with other pets, and is good with children. As with all small dogs, dependant upon how you treat this dog will have a vast impact on their temperament; small dog syndrome is something to be avoided as this will lead to a demanding dog that can be incredibly headstrong, becoming protective and openly aggressive with other dogs, and possibly people.

At the least your dog will bark far more than you wish for. This dog, like all others require a good pack leader, this is the owner. Health issues: The Miniature Pinscher has no problems and is of good general health.

Grooming: Using a firm bristle brush or comb, brush twice weekly or more often as needed. This breed is easy to keep clean. If required using a damp warm cloth, wipe the coat down to keep the coat clean.

Living conditions: The Miniature Pinscher breed is a good choice for apartment life. It is active indoors and can live without a garden. Always make sure your dog has a walk daily, as it is not just good physical exercise, but also gives the mind something to do, which is important for this breed.

The Tibetan Mastiff is a good dog for families with children — IF they are socialized early and spend time with the children. They are loving but not needy or passive.

They are extremely territorial and protective of what they feel is theirs, so they make excellent guard and watchdogs. However, they are suspicious of strangers and can become aggressive if not controlled. They also seem to hate all other dogs and will fight them with no warning at all.

They seem to do best when they have wide open spaces to run and be alone. For this reason and the fact that they don’t do well with strangers or other dogs, the ASPCA recommends this dog for experienced dog owners only and cautions that it is not suitable for city or apartment life.

Appearance of the Tibetan Mastiff

Well, it’s from the Mastiff family, so you know it is big. They can stand as much as 24 to 28 inches tall and weigh in a a whopping 140 to 200 pounds.

Their outercoat of hard, straight and quite long. It is also quite thick and is heavier around the neck and shoulder area, giving them a mane-like look. The tail is bushy and curls up over the back like a Spitz.

The undercoat is heavy and woolly during the winter months and more sparse in warmer weather.

Their coloring is rich black and tan or brown with various shades of gold and gray highlights. A white patch usually appears on the chest and on the feet. On the darker coated dogs, a gold or tan patch usually appears above each eye, on the lower legs and on the tip of the bushy tail,

Grooming and Exercise Needs

The Tibetan Mastiff should be brushed well daily and bathed often. Like most large dogs and Mastiff in particular, these dogs are generally low energy. A brisk, long walk each day should be enough exercise to keep them fit and healthy.

A healthy Tibetan Mastiff can expect to live 10 – 12 years.

Origins

The origins of the Mastiff line are unknown. But there is evidence that the Tibetan Mastiff has been around for more than 1000 years and was — and still is — used to guard livestock in the Himalayan mountains.

What kind of things can dogs eat that we us, humans eat also?

I know that dogs can’t eat chocolate, corn, wheat, grapes, dairy products, and etc. But what can a dog eat that humans eat? I know dogs can eat chicken (w/o bones), apples, but what else?

Some good, healthy “people food” items that dogs can eat are:

Plain yogurt
Fish oil, Flax oil
Carrots, broccoli, green peppers, tomatoes, green beans, peas, frozen mixed vegetables
Blueberries, strawberries, melon, apples
V8 Juice
Canned sardines, mackerel or salmon
Cottage cheese, grated cheese
Chicken
Rice (preferably brown rice)
Whole grain pasta (preferably not wheat-based)

Try not to have add-ins make up more than about 20% of your dog’s diet. The bulk should be a premium kibble unless you’re feeding a tried-and-true raw or home-cooked diet.

Description: The Shetland Sheepdog is a small dog that stands approximately 13 to 16 at the withers. It will weigh between 14 and 26 pounds, depending on the dog’s sex. Also known as the Sheltie, it has a double coat consisting of long, roughish hairs over a shorter, softer undercoat. The head of the Shetland Sheepdog is wedge-shaped, tapering to the nose. The ears are what is called 3/4 erect, with the tips folded down. The most usual coat color is sable, but blue-black, tan and white, and black and white are also common. The Shetland Sheep dog usually lives for 12 to 15 years.

History: Although many people consider that the Shetland Sheepdog looks like a miniature Rough-Haired Collie, it is actually descended from the Border Collie. Taken to the island of Shetland, the Border Collie was bred with a dog called the Icelandic Yakkin, which is extinct. The Collie was also bred into the dog to produce the Sheltie, which was recognizable as a breed by the early 18th century. The flocks of sheep on the Shetland Islands needed a guard and herding dog and the Shetland Sheepdog filled this task admirably.

Temperament: The Shetland Sheepdog is a gently, docile dog that makes an excellent and loyal companion to its human family. As the Shetland Sheep dog was developed as a herding and guard dog, it still manifests these qualities for its human friends, and will prove to be a good watchdog, alerting the family with barks if a stranger comes to the house. The Sheltie is a kind dog that does very well with children. A word of caution would be that because this dog is small, it might be inadvertently injured if children were too rough with it.

Health Issues: The most frequently seen problem in the Shetland Sheepdog is the possibility of diseases or structural malformation of the eyes. Another serious problem is Von Willebrand’s Disease, a type of hemophilia. Unlike other breeds, in which an affected dog can often live a normal life span, a Sheltie with this condition will generally succumb to it at an early age. Hip dysplasia is found in this breed as are problems with the kneecap.

Grooming: It would probably be considered that, given the long coat of the Shetland Sheepdog, that a great deal of time would be involved in grooming this dog. Surprisingly, the coat only needs to be brushed once a week, except during the spring and fall sheds. The Shetland Sheepdog should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. The toenails should be kept short, and attention should be paid to make sure the hair between the toes does not grow too long.

Living Conditions: The Shetland Sheepdog is an intelligent, loyal little dog that wants to be near its human friends. It is a dog that requires a good deal of exercise, so an active family is best. A large yard is probably best for the Sheltie, giving it ample space for play and running. This dog can live in an apartment as long as its owner gives it sufficient opportunity for exercise.

Origins of the Borzoi:

Arabian by origin, they were brought to Russia to hunt foxes, hares, and especially wolves, thus earning the name ‘The Russian Wolf Hound’. Borzoi was extensively used by Russian aristocrats to hunt game animals in groups.

In time, the Borzoi had become very popular in Europe. They had become very frequent gifts among nobility. After generations of being kept as a house pet the Borzoi became more and more docile.

The name Borzoi was from the Russian word ‘borzii’ which means quick or swift.

Appearance and Abilities of Borzois:

Borzois are tall and lanky dogs. At first glance, it is very apparent that they have close resemblance to Afghan and Taigan hounds. In fact, Borzois are the typical middle Asian breed of sight hounds

Their coats are long and silky and their coats are either flat, wavy, or a bit curly. Borzoi coats should never be woolly but they can come in almost any color or color combination.

The Borzoi is streamlined for speed and grace and they have surprising strength in such a seemingly thin frame. Their jaws are very powerful too.

Borzois are very alert dogs. They have very good eyesight and they can chase down sighted game with their innate ability to move with remarkable speed and agility.

Temperament and Tendencies of Borzois:

In general, Borzois are very quiet but alert dogs. They bark very rarely and they would make very poor guard dogs because they have weak territorial instincts. Borzois are on the aloof side but they will rarely show aggression. Borzois have a natural respect to man’s natural authority; they are not dominant by nature.

Borzois’ intelligence is not slavish but rather instinctive. They display their intelligence when out on the field, doing work. Training them with obedience commands or tricks can become very challenging because Borzois are very independent minded. Borzois are among of the least intelligent breed of dog in degree of working or obedience intelligence.

However, they are not ‘dumb dogs’. They just don’t respond well to human commands as compared to other breeds. Borzois are easily bored and distracted especially if training is repetitive and seemingly pointless. Nevertheless, they are clever and cunning especially when on the hunt.

Borzois thrive in agility trials and other physical events. They are naturally athletic and tirelessly energetic when out on the field.

Training and Care of Borzois:

First and foremost, Borzois are very sensitive dogs and they should never be subjected to any rough or harsh means of training. They just don’t respond well to spanking and scolding. Doing so, will only make the dog develop maladaptive behaviors and may become miserable for the rest of its life.

Always take into account that Borzois are hounds. Although they can be trained, never lose sight of the fact that they are free thinkers by nature. Don’t expect too much of your Borzoi in terms of obedience or tricks training.

Fortunately, Borzois are very immaculate breeds. They are cat-like in their cleanliness and therefore, they are very easy to house train

Borzois are elegant companions and are known to be well-behaved inside the house and energetic outside. They are not very obedient trick dogs but they are naturally docile and refined. Just give them their daily dose of exercise and your life with Borzois is enjoyable worthwhile.
