The Poodle is one of the most loved and hated dog breeds. Often seen fully coiffed either in competition or strolling with their owners, their fur simultaneously pouffed high and trimmed close, poodles appear to be a haughty and decadent dog breed to the Poodle layman.

Surprisingly, the history of the poodle is actually very down-to-earth. Poodles are water dogs. They are naturals at hunting birds in water and on land. The name Poodle comes from the German words Pudel or Pudelhund, which means splashing and splashing dog respectively. The name for Poodles is related to the English word puddle. Knowing Poodles are named after a simple puddle makes the breed seem less intimidating already. Poodles most likely originated in Eastern Europe and they have been popular throughout Europe for hundreds of years. However, it is the French who are given credit for the breed.

French Poodle breeders successfully cultivated all three sizes of Poodle: miniature, toy and standard.

The three sizes of Poodle: miniature, toy and standard have similar traits of all Poodles but differ in height and weight. Miniature Poodles are fifteen to seventeen pounds and eleven to fifteen inches in height at the shoulder. Toy Poodles are six to nine pounds and up to ten inches at the shoulder. Standard Poodles are forty-five to seventy pounds and over fifteen inches at the shoulder.

Poodle breeders breed for overall traits such as high energy level, intelligence, proud or regal carriage, straight, delicate muzzle, small, oval feet, and curly, dense fur among other characteristics. There are many champion lines of Poodle due to the many winners of American Kennel Club and other canine association competitions. Purebred Poodles should come with a documented pedigree or ancestry showing evidence of past champions in the genetic line.

Poodles, like other purebred dogs, have some common genetic flaws, which lead to medical conditions. Poodle breeders should discontinue breeding any line found to have these conditions. Some of the likely health problems are: Addison’s disease, gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV), thyroid and renal conditions, hip dysplasia, and cancer.

When interviewing Poodle breeders, buyers should bring a list of questions to determine a reputable breeder from a bad breeder. Buyers should do their homework in advance and be ready to commit to Poodles at the time of purchase. Some excellent questions to ask to help buyers find good Poodle breeders include do you maintain your own kennel and can I visit it, can I meet the parents and receive pedigree papers, can I get medical and immunization records and do you offer a warranty. Good Poodle breeders will run their own kennels and encourage potential buyers to visit and meet not only the puppies but the parents as well. The kennels should be clean and allow good socialization. Reputable breeders will also give new owners lots of information out Poodles, especially car and feeding instructions.

Good Poodle breeders will care where the puppies are going and what kind of care they will receive. Expect to have answers for the breeder as well to questions about your home and environment.

Filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 Connolly shows exactly why he was regarded as one the top 3 comedians in the world alongside Richard Pryor and Robin Williams.

This tour became infamous after Margaret Thatcher’s daughter Carol stormed out of one of his show after taking exception to jokes Connolly made about her mother’s resignation as Prime Minister.

Another night at the Hammersmith Apollo and another classic Connolly DVD. Some classic stories about growing up in Glasgow, his early work in the shipyards, and singing at parties.

This video was also highly controversial. Shortly after it’s original release it was removed from distribution after jokes Connolly made about mass-murderer Fred West. With West’s trial still ongoing at the time several minutes were removed after he complained that it may prejudice his case.

Connolly famously remarked “I think the bodies in your garden will do that Fred.”

4. Billy Connolly Bites Yer Bum

Filmed at the Victoria Apollo in 1981 this was Billy Connolly’s first live video. A culmination of a year-long tour of Britain.

Contains a lot of Connolly’s cruder early material and some classic song parodies.

Billy Connolly’s second ever live video. Contains his brilliant routine about ‘The Lovely Raquel – the inflatable lady.’

This is early Connolly when his act was more based on jokes than his later observational-style.

Billy Connolly’s second BBC tour series. A country that Connolly hated in his early days it is now a place he truly loves. He experiences several Australian customs and attractions including swimming with dolphins, pie floaters and museums and galleries featuring Aboriginal art.

The third in the World Tour series for the BBC. Connolly travels throughout the UK to show some of the places close to his heart. This includes things such as: the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland; His grandfather’s grave in Southern Ireland; and the Geordie miners.

Dog fighting cruelty in Ireland – Part 1 of 2

boxer / pit bull attacked my dog. Have you had trouble with these breeds and your dogs?

Yesterday at the dog park in Long Beach, CA a boxer/pitbull mix attacked my dog and bit him. This dog that attacked was in a large group of dogs that was in the dog park illegally since you are only supposed to be with one dog per person. The animal control told me to call them whenever there are groups of dogs with one person. Every single time they are there though. I probably won’t be going there any time soon. Anyone else have problems with bigger aggressive dogs like pit bulls attacking your dogs? Recently a dog was mauled there by 2 pit bulls, and the dog beach in Long Beach in January, a chihuahua was killed by 2 pit bulls. I have a friend that has the sweetest female pit that I can have my small Shiba Inu dog around.
The dog care walker said it was a boxer/pit mix and she quickly placed it in a time out fenced area.

It’s not the breed, but the irresponsible owner that’s the problem. The owner was already breaking the rules by having too many dogs. And if you keep seeing them there, then they are bringing a known dog-aggressive dog back to a dog park. That’s not the dog’s fault, it’s the idiot owner.

Don’t blame the breed, blame the owner.

Hooray Rachel for saying it. Listen people, she’s pit owner and lover!!! It’s how the owner handles the dog and the decisions the owner makes.

I have large dogs (goldens) and the biggest problems I’ve had have been with other types of breeds, some large and some quite small. I’ve had problems with a lab, a ridgeback and a Boston terrorist. I don’t do dog parks for this reason.

LYNNAE – you’ve fallen for the locking jaw crap. It’s not true. Pits have strong jaws but their jaws do not lock. It’s a pile of fear-mongering crap.

What’s a good place for custom pet clothing?

I’m not actually one to dress up pets, but while playing with my Basset Hound I jokingly put my flat cap on him. Except for being a too big it didn’t really look that bad on him. I was wondering if anyone knew of a company that either sells flat caps for dogs or has the option of describing a design to be custom made?

Why do Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies always make the list for top 10 most dangerous dog breeds?

I googled the most dangerous breeds. In most lists, Pitbulls, Rotties and German Shepherd were in the top 3 but right after them were Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. What makes those dogs top 10 most dangerous breed material?

Usually Huskies and Malamutes make the list because everyone wants a “cute lil wolf dog” to add to their family but they don’t want to take the time to train them. Huskies are high strung dogs and LOVE to play and sometimes they forget how strong they are and how big they are. Because they are pack animals they are used to playing with other dogs and getting the warning signs of going to far with the playing that another dog would give them. So when these ignorant people who didn’t do their research before buying end up with someone getting bit or someone getting hurt due to the high energy these dogs have. They also leave their other animals unattended with the husky and malamute which can be deadly espeically if the other animal is smaller. Huskies usually only hurt animals and people when they are just trying to play. Kids and small animals should never be unsupervised with ANY dog. Most people also don’t realize that these out of any other dog breed are primarily pack dogs. They are wild at heart and need to be taught early on who is the alpha in the household. No one these days no how to teach their dogs this anymore and then they wonder why their dog bites them. I own a siberian husky and she is the love of my life. I can pick her up roll her over take her food rough her up (just in a playing manner of course) and she has never hurt me or any of my other animals (2 cats 2 other dogs 2 guinea pigs and my 2 month old kitten). I tend to be a little harsh when it comes to this subject because no one cares enough to research the breeds they are about to add to their home, which leads to overflow of dogs in rescue’s and shelters. It’s very sad, and not fair at all. While some aggression can be genetic with proper training anything is possible and I believe that it is absolutely ridiculous to have a list like that. I’ve met Rottweilers who thought they were lap dogs and were the sweetest things you could ask for and then again I had a cocker spaniel practically take my cousins nose off! It all depends on how you raise them.
